Danse : The Disappearing Act
LE HAVRE
Description
Yinka Esi Graves
A camouflaged self-portrait, this danced solo is bathed in the searing energy of flamenco, infused with vocals, guitar and drums in a tailor-made, telluric score. Revealed at the 78th edition of the Festival d?Avignon in 2024, where she presented this intimate and political, hybrid and powerful performance, Yinka Esi Graves draws on the roots of flamenco to reveal the underside of a mixed and amnesiac culture. A focused art form that has forgotten the plurality that underlies it, in particular what it owes to African culture. A mix of dance, drawing, text and video, this epidermal show revives the memory of the invisible by tilling the soil of history. Born in England to a Ghanaian mother and Jamaican father, and living in Seville, Yinka Esi Graves rekindles broken ties and deploys a precise, deeply-rooted gestural style that is as intense as it is delicate. The Disappearing Act is her very first solo creation, and it’s a tour de force.
