Description
Les Musiciens de Saint-Julien / Rosemary Standley
They share a taste for the British music of yesterday and today. Singer Rosemary Standley joins Les Musiciens de Saint-Julien in this exploratory journey through the folk songs of yesteryear. Scottish and Irish in inspiration, these charming songs, known as the Child Ballads, were collected and published in the 19th century by Francis James Child, an American professor of rhetoric and public speaking, and a devotee of traditional English music. A repertoire of some 300 titles that continues to influence the folk movement that emerged in the 1960s. Supported by counterpoint, the sumptuous timbre of Rosemary Standley (divine performer with Moriarty and Birds on Wire) soars amid the voluptuousness of the ancient instruments accompanying her: flutes, bagpipes, tympanum, harp, viola da gamba and cello, percussion and theorbo. A selection of nuggets, simply enchanting.
